Adult Diapers Environmental Effects
The use of adult diapers or adult briefs as some would prefer to call them has been steadily growing as the world population ages. Not only is this trend continuing due to advancing average life expectancy in many parts of the world but contributing factors towards this trend are also overall world population growth as well as the steadily increasing standard of living in such populous nations as China and India. These nations are also growing economically which will likely result in greater disposable income to make such purchases in the years to come. All of these factors and more have and will continue to push the overall total use of diapers in not only babies but also the seriously disabled and the elderly diaper market as well.
Consequently, the debate continues to rage as to what the overall impact is and will be to our environment as well as what we can do about it. Two of the most basic issues of debate are disposable verse cloth diapers. While this may at first appear to be purely a personal preference, careful examination reveals that the choices consumers make concerning disposable or cloth diapers can have a substantial impact on the environment. In fact, so serious is the problem that the UK Environment Agency and Department for Environment, Food and Rural affairs studied that very issue in October 2008 and concluded that reusable cloth diapers can contribute significantly less damage to the environment or significantly more damage depending primarily on how the caregivers wash and dry the cloth diapers. In the above study the impact could be as much as 40% difference between disposable diapers and cloth in favor of cloth diapers. Another more comprehensive cradle to grave study sponsored by the National Association of Diaper Services indicated a huge disparity in environmental impact primarily driven by the fact the disposable adult diapers as well as children's result in 7 times more landfill waste and nearly three times more waste during the manufacturing process. This study did, however, indicate that cloth diapers consumes between 16 and 23 gallons of water per day during the cleaning process. In many areas of the world water availability is very limited which will undoubtedly impact their choices over time. When one accounts for the chemicals used in the cleaning process as well as the energy that will be used to clean the soiled water the picture becomes even less clear.
One ingenious company in Japan has come up with a unique way to solve the problem associated with disposable incontinence products while at the same time having a positive impact on yet another pressing problem in the world. They have developed an incinerator that powers a generator thereby converting an unwanted waste product into the highly desirable commodity of electricity! While that may not be a viable option in all parts of the world, in areas where landfill space is limited, populations are denser, and the need for electricity is ever growing this is could be a very attractive solution.
It is likely that the debate will likely continue to rage with each side promoting their own beliefs and interests on the subject. There are some conclusions that are, from an objective standpoint, quite clear. First and foremost is that some areas of the world will find cloth diapers to be the best option based on the availability of their unique resources of land and water as well as population density while others will find disposable diapers for both children and adults to be the most logical choice. Secondly, a brief look at the ingenuity of mankind over the years reveals the fact that very few obstacles are insurmountable. Given enough time and economic incentive, we will likely overcome this obstacle as we have so many others throughout time.
