I have to admit that, as a new parent, I wasn't too concerned about too many things. Okay, I'll still admit: I'm pretty laid back. In fact, I have friends that would definitely categorize me as one who is under concerned- things don't phase me even when they should. However, as an experienced parent (thirteen years now!) I have found that some things just trigger my mama-bear instincts and get me going. For example, I've had quite the journey with diapers, using just about everything in the book, from cloth, standard disposable and chlorine free baby diapers. I've learned a lot along the way, becoming an expert on all things diaper related. As a new parent, making this decision can seem confusing. Let me help you understand the issues involved.
Disposable Diapers
I will openly admit that I started my parenting journey by pretty much following the crowd. I have always breastfed, but even that barely qualifies, as that's pretty standard in my neck of the woods. Diapers, however, are all disposables, all the time. So, that's what I did. I have to just come right out and say that I love the convenience that they offer. What I hate is the cost and the environmental impact. Plus, my first son just could not figure out how to potty train. Go figure- the kid couldn't tell when he was wet! These problems led me to explore options like chlorine free baby diapers and cloth.
Cloth Diapers
I started my foray into cloth diapering when my oldest child was about a year and a half. We were classic newlyweds and, well, just plain broke. Plus, I had just taken up sewing in a pretty serious way, so it made a lot of sense. I have used cloth diapers over the years with all of my kids, as well as the chlorine free baby diapers that we'll discuss next, but there are definitely issues, the biggest being that several of my kids have very sensitive skin. Being exposed to that amount of wetness lead to problems with rash. I personally didn't find them difficult to clean, but many parents resort to bleach, which kind of negates the environmental loveliness of using cloth.
Chlorine Free Baby Diapers
For me, this option has been one of the best compromises. I don't have to mess with the hassle (however slight) of packing, changing and washing cloth diapers, but I still get the environmental priorities taken care of. Plus, no more rashes! I can't tell you how sad it is to deal with consistent diaper rash. I just can't do that to my baby, so the cloth had to go for good with some of my kids. For some parents, however, they find that using a combination makes sense. For example, cloth at home and chlorine free baby diapers for night time and when on outings. This keeps costs down, while still providing the convenience and flexibility that you need. In addition, these keep my baby dry, but aren't so absorbent that I have issues with potty training.
